To assist the herd manager within the team;  working with the herd in a broad role with the scope to take agreed areas of responsibility based on doing approximately one third of the milking. The role also involves the youngstock/dry stock with a full range of husbandry care.  To summarise, the successful applicant will have the opportunity of becoming involved in all aspects of the management of the herd.

Job Description

This role focuses on the herd of 450 high yielding Holstein/Friesian cows.  Milking will be done with a 2 man milking team through a refreshed 40:40 DTL parlour from this summer, with Auto Dipping and Flushing, ACR’s, Heat Time, Auto Shedding and excellent throughput/handling facilities.

Calving in an autumn block, the cows are housed in recently constructed first class conditions throughout, and have yields in excess of 10,000 litres per cow.  

This position, given the availability of training and support, is a great opportunity as a stepping stone to levels of responsibility and large herd management.  The unit continues to be well staffed with a skilled and dedicated team structured to ensure their wellbeing as well as performance and consistency for the cows.

Location: The business is situated 8 miles inland of Eastbourne, 3 miles from the market town of Hailsham.  In Hailsham and the local village of Upper Dicker, there are a good selection of primary and secondary schools, shops and facilities.

The Dairy Unit: The dairy unit will have a new 40:40 parlour by this summer (subject to CO VID 19 restrictions), milking will be done by a 2 man milking team; the new facilities will include new handling facilities for AI, foot trimming etc. The unit is well laid out and all milking and dry cows are housed on sand based cubicles.  The herd are housed in new sand cubicle accommodation.  All youngstock are removed from the unit at 48 hours of age to the farm’s neighbouring youngstock unit.

The Dairy Herd: Autumn calving from early August through to November.  The 450 cow herd yields in excess of 10,000 litres on twice a day milking.  The cows are complete diet fed on a ration of maize and grass silage with additional straights, no feeding in the parlour. 

The Farm: Primrose and Parkwood Farms are amalgamated to form a 500 acre intensive dairy farm.  Approximately 200 acres of maize and 300 acres of grassland are cropped.  In addition, there is an equestrian enterprise, farm trail and let shooting and fishing.  It is anticipated that the farm will qualify for entry level stewardship this year. 

The Accommodation: The farm will provide an excellent standard of accommodation to match your needs this will be available free from rent, rates and council tax.

Remuneration: Depending on age and experience.

Time Off: 104 days per contract year.
