Job Summary

We require a highly experienced herdsperson to take full day-to-day control of a high yielding herd in West Wiltshire. 

Job Skills

The herdsperson is well supported by farm staff who undertake bedding and feeding and regular time off is covered by a local relief.  DIY AI and foot trimming are desirable as is the capability to keep accurate records and liaise with the vet and nutritionist.

Job Description

The herd is loose housed, TMR fed and milked through a 12:12 Herringbone, average yields are 9500 litres/cow.  

A good package is offered with an attractive 3-bedroom centrally heated bungalow a short distance from the dairy unit.  

FACT SHEET

LOCATION: Wiltshire/Somerset border - Laverton, North of Frome.

THE FARM: A 900 acre mixed unit with arable, dairy and pig enterprises and part of the Duchy Estate.  

THE UNIT: The cows are loose housed and fed a TMR ration all year round.  Separate feed pad facilities exist in order to feed TMR to cows whilst at grass.  Milking is undertaking through a 12/12 DTL parlour.   The cows are recorded with NMR and a brayboard is used; the herdsperson is to pay close attention to accurate record keeping.  DIY AI is required as is the ability to trim feet and keep on top of herd health issues, working closing with the vet.

DAIRY HERD: The herd comprises of 120 cows plus followers, calving July to Christmas.  Average yields 9,300 litres, cell count 120 -200, bactoscan 20.  The Pedigree herd is very well bred and capable of high yields if they are well managed with close attention to detail in the future.  The milk is sold to Barbers for cheese making.  There is a good support team on the farm who undertake the feeding and bedding to a high standard.  Calf rearing is undertaken by farm staff under the supervision of the herdsman.

ACCOMMODATION: A 3-bedroom detached bungalow is on offer, which has oil fired central heating and has been newly redecorated.  The bungalow is about a quarter of a mile from the unit. 

TIME OFF:  A local relief provides 80 days cover per annum.  A good remuneration package is on offer to the successful candidate.
