TO MILK ONCE PER DAY
We require a skilled and experienced herdsperson to share responsibility for the day-day running of a herd of Holstein x Friesian cows on a forward thinking dairy farm approximately 15 miles west of Chester.
Key responsibilities will include afternoon milkings, foot trimming, AI (preferable), herd health & fertility and record keeping. The successful candidate must have a proven track record in all these areas and be willing to work as part of a team.

Location: The farm is located just outside Mold in North Wales, which is approximately 15 miles west of Chester. There are excellent transport links and very good local schools in the area.
The Farm: The modern and progressive farm comprises of 550 acres carrying 300 milking cows plus replacements as well as some pedigree sheep on a single unit.
The farm has made significant investment over the past few years with new dry cow accommodation and calving area. Key farm facts are as follows:

Staffing: As well as the husband and wife team who work on the farm there is also a full-time GFW / tractor driver and part-time staff.
The Herd: The herd currently consists of 300 Holstein X Friesian cows yielding just under 8,500 litres. It is the farm’s aim to maximise the amount of milk they can get from forage and increase the overall herd average to around 9,000 litres.
Calving takes place all year round and all replacements are reared in-house with beef calves sold locally.
Milk is sold on a Tesco contract contract.
Feet & Fertility: Feet are addressed partly in-house and partly with the use of an external contractor. Foot bathing takes place on a daily basis with the use of a new auto-fill foot bath system. Insemination of the cows is carried out in-house with the use of DIY AI and most heat detection is carried out using observation.
Nutrition: Cows are grazed during the summer months and fed the following TMR during the winter (and also as a buffer when required):-
• Grass silage
• Maize silage
• Protected fats
• Vits & Mins
The Role: A competent and experienced herdsperson is required to work alongside the farmer and existing team to help manage the day-day running of the herd.
Main tasks are as follows:
• All PM & 2 x AM Milking (& both milkings every other weekend)
• Foot trimming
• AI preferable
• Animal Health & Welfare
• General stock husbandry tasks
• General farm work
The Person: You need to be a competent and accomplished herdsperson who is able to think for themselves and run all elements of a modern dairy herd when the owner is away. Someone who is a good decision maker and willing to be dedicated to animal health and welfare and willing to work as part of a team are essential qualities for this role.
A proven track record of stockmanship is a must for this position as well as milking, foot trimming and AI (preferable).
