Job Summary

Following the retirement of our Herd Manager and his wife after 15 years we have a new contract vacancy for an accomplished Herd Manager to carry out the day-to-day management on this modern and well equipped dairy unit near Bridgwater.

Job Skills

The successful candidate will need to have a good mix of technical expertise and practical ability which will allow them to accept the responsibility necessary to allow this unit to realise its full potential. A significant level of autonomy will be given to the right person to stamp their mark on this herd with the challenge of maximising the level of milk sold. A working couple would be considered as calf rearing and youngstock duties could be included.

Job Description

Stockland Lovell Farm is home to the Farm Estate Pedigree herd of Holsteins which together with a large equestrian business including events course are the 2 main enterprises. The farm extends to over 300ha and with the exception of a small area of wheat is exclusively used to provide forage for the cows. The farm is well invested and facilities include

•    Pedigree breeding with increasing use of sexed semen
•    In excess of 11000ltrs NMR recorded results
•    Mattress and sawdust bedded cubicle shed with wide passages
•    24/24 Gascoigne parlour with ACR’s
•    ANKA Hydraulic Foot Crush
•    Interherd Records

The dairy buildings and calf shed are all in close proximity on the main site with further youngstock housing a few miles away. There are 256 cubicles under one roof with wide passages, auto scrapers and central feed passage in addition to loose housing for down calvers. A full vaccination programme is undertaken with both cows and youngstock and beef calves are sold at market from 12 weeks.

An attractive 4-bedroom detached house with c/h and d/g and a large garden is available within walking distance of the unit and will be provided rent and council tax free. The financial package for this role will reflect the importance of the position.
