We have a vacancy on a well-respected mixed farm family business with a herd of 180 cows. We seek a keen, motivated herdsperson to pick up the reins and continue the smooth running of this herd.
The farm supplies milk on an M & S contract and you will be responsible for maintaining levels of production, welfare and attention to detail with excellent support from a skilled farm team.
The position will suit a focused herdsperson able to work and communicate with a dedicated team, covering the day to day care and management of the herd which calves in the autumn, who has a proven track record of quality milk production.
The management of the cows is well catered for with facilities which include a 16:16 parlour, sand cubicles and modern additional dry stock housing. There is excellent family accommodation available to the successful applicant on the farm, in a very picturesque part of the county, along with an excellent pay and time off package.
LOCATION: The farm is situated in the small hamlet of Upwaltham. The large towns of Petworth and Chichester are both about seven miles away and have a selection of shops and facilities. The larger village of East Dean is three miles away, and has a primary school.
THE FARM: The farm is a family business and has been farmed by the same family for several generations. This is an 1800 acre arable/grassland farm, with over 1000 acres of crops, grassland.
THE UNIT: The unit comprises of housing on sand cubicles and milked through a computerised 16:16 DTL parlour. Feeding system is maize/grass silage in bunkers with feeding in the parlour.
THE DAIRY HERD: The herd currently comprises of approximately 180 cows, herd health is good, with bactoscans and cell counts in the top band. Calving is throughout the autumn period. Yields are in the region of 9,000 litres, selling milk to M & S.
ACCOMMODATION: There is very spacious family housing well located on the farm which is full of character and in good order.
SUMMARY: This is a well-cared for herd, in a very pleasant location. There is an opportunity here to develop the unit and herd and your husbandry skills. The farm has ensured excellent support to ensure the welfare of herd and herdsman.
