Job Summary

We require a dedicated and professional herdsperson to share responsibility with the existing herdsman on a 200 cow unit between Welshpool and Shrewsbury.

Job Skills

The role would involve milking, calf rearing, proactive cow health and welfare, foot trimming and general stock tasks working alongside the owner and other herdsman. You will have experience in a similar role, dedication, attention to detail and be able to bring new ideas for the benefit of the herd and owner. Ability to devise and adhere to strict protocols is also essential for this role.

Job Description

The farm is enjoying continued investment in both infrastructure and machinery, resulting in excellent facilities and working environment for both staff and cows. The herd currently achieves around 9,500 litres, is mainly late summer/autumn calved and milked through a 20:20 parlour fitted with all modern equipment to aid the herdsperson in their work.

Location:  The farm is located just 2 miles east of Welshpool towards Shrewsbury.  There are excellent transport links and very good local schools and amenities  in the area.

The Farm:  The progressive farm comprises of 310 acres carrying 200 milking cows plus replacements all on a single unit.

The farm has enjoyed continued investment throughout the years resulting in excellent facilities and working environment for both staff and cow. Key farm facts are as follows:

Staffing: Full time herdsman, the owner who will reduce input when new recruit has settled into their role and two part-time assistants to cover for days off.

The Herd: The herd currently consists of 200 Holstein cows that are Pedigree and yielding 9,500 litres. 

Calving takes place July to February (with an autumn bias) and all replacements are reared in-house with beef calves sold locally after 3-4 weeks. 

Current annual milk quality is as follows:

• 170 Cell count

• 25 Bactoscan

Milk is sold to Arla.

Feet & Fertility:  Feet are addressed in-house and prevention rather than cure is very much the preferred method with regular foot trimming and foot bathing taking place on all the cows. Fertility is very good on the farm with a calving index of approximately 395 days. All AI is currently carried out by RMS, with the additional use of sweeper bulls.

Nutrition: Cows graze six acre paddocks during the summer months and fed the following TMR during the winter (and also as a buffer when required):

• Grass silage

• Straw

• Blend

Nutritional advice is carried out by an external nutritionist.

The Role: A competent and experienced herdsperson is required to share the day-day running of the herd with the existing herdsman who has been in position over 5 years.

Main tasks are as follows:

• Milking (1.5 x people in parlour)

• Manage herd health and fertility

• Foot trimming

• Cubicle hygiene

• Dry / young stock hygiene/bedding

• Calf rearing and health

• TMR Feeding

• General stock husbandry tasks

• General farm work

The Person: You need to be a very dedicated herdsperson who has real attention to detail, but is also flexible and willing to carry out a number of different tasks and fit in with the existing team. Someone who is enthusiastic and a good communicator are essential qualities for this role. Ability to follow protocols are paramount on this farm.

A proven track record of being a herdsperson for a number of years is a must for this position as well as milking and foot trimming experience.
