Job Skills

The role is roughly to be split between the dairy and arable farm enterprises. The role will include regular milking shifts as well as significant time spent supporting the arable team and other farm enterprises when necessary.

The farm seeks and will reward enthusiasm and commitment within a diverse and varied role. You will play an active part in the performance of the farm across multiple enterprises.  The farm continues to invest with an emphasis on operating as a team with continuous training opportunities both on and off farm available to enable the team to operate to their full potential.

Job Description

The herd is heading towards 500 cows, milked 3 times a day and calving between August and April.  With milk sales above 12,000 litres per cow the farm provides an excellent opportunity to apply and develop husbandry and stockmanship skills as a member of a very skilled and focused team.

The arable team is responsible for growing and harvesting Winter Wheat, Winter Barley, Grass, Maize and other crops across 560 Hectares. In addition to this we have all slurry application in-house. The team is very experienced and continues to implement new technologies to continuously improve performance. This provides a fantastic opportunity to learn from a very knowledgeable team.

FACT SHEET

LOCATION: The farm is situated approximately one mile from Steyning, a picturesque village with fantastic views over the South Downs, which has very good schools, shops and sports facilities.  Brighton, Chichester, Worthing, Horsham and Gatwick Airport are all within easy reach so there are a huge range of facilities in the area.

FARM: This mixed farm is 2000 acres across two locations. Focussing on dairy, arable and.  This is a family owned business, with the family taking an active role in the running of the farm.

UNIT: This is a fantastic true mixed farm.  The dairy is based around a Westfalia 32 point rotary parlour with ADF, auto ID shedding, and “Heat Time”.  There are excellent handling facilities, the housing is either new or recently refurbished mattress cubicles. 

The arable enterprise runs a Min Till system with all drilling, spraying, manure application, fertiliser application and combining done in house with 3 Fendt tractors. 

There are also 250 North Country Mule sheep that lamb outside in April.

ACCOMMODATION: There is the potential for excellent on farm accommodation, surrounded by the South Downs on the farm, near the unit.  

REMUNERATION: Subject to negotiation.

TIME OFF: 80 days per contract year.

SUMMARY : This is a role that would lend itself to someone who wants to develop an all-round skill set. Someone who has a desire to integrate, learn and contribute with the teams around them will do very well and have opportunities for progression.    While some dairy experience would be preferable the right attitude and the ability to learn is more important. The business will offer the successful candidate every opportunity for training and to gain further experience on all aspects of their role. The farm takes pride in seeing people grow their skill set and take on additional responsibilities where possible.
