We require a self-motivated stockman to carry out the day-to-day duties on a modern and progressive dairy unit re-built in 2012 near Bristol.
Wyndhurst Farm is Bristol Universities’ dairy unit at their School of Veterinary Science at Langford. The farm has a unit manager, head herdsperson and a tractor driver/Stockperson.
The farm has a large and airy umbrella building incorporating a 24:24 Herringbone parlour with Auto ID, with Delaval automatic backing gate, sand cubicles for 220 cows which are on a full TMR ration with a litre average of 10,000/l+. The cows are housed all year round. There are excellent slurry lagoon/facilities along with silage pits and youngstock housing.

Key responsibilities will include:-
• Feeding the dairy herd and youngstock
• Calf feeding
• Loader/tractor tasks – mucking out etc
• Assisting with management of youngstock/transition cows
• Relief milking
The successful candidate must have some previous livestock and machinery experience, be motivated and able to work well as part of a team to a high standard, coping with the challenges of both internal and external customers (vets, students, teaching staff etc). Sheep experience may also be an advantage as there will be the opportunity to get involved with the management of the flock for the right person.
Location: The farm is located in the village of Lower Langford adjacent to the Bristol University School of Veterinary Science, equally placed between Bristol and Weston-Super-Mare. The area has excellent transport links and there are also very good local school and amenities.
The Farm: The modern progressive farm comprises of approximately 275 acres carrying 220 milking cows plus replacements on this single unit plus a small flock of sheep.

Staffing: Unit Manager, Head Herdsperson,Tractor Driver/Stockman.
The herd: The herd currently consists of 220 Holstein cows yielding over 10,000 litres, milk quality is excellent. Calving takes place all year round and all replacements are reared in house with beef calves sold locally. Milk is sold to Muller/Wiseman on a liquid contract. Cows are TMR fed all year round.
All breeding is currently done by Cogent under their ‘precision’ service using the latest pedometer technology.
The role: An experienced Stockman/GFW/Tractor Driver/Occasional Relief Milker is required to work alongside the existing team to drive the business further forward. Sheep experience may also be an advantage as there will be the opportunity to get involved with the management of the flock for the right person.
Main tasks are as follows:
• Feeding the dairy herd using a Class Scorpion telehandler, Case Maxxum 125 multicontroller Tractor, Shelborne Reynolds 19cm twin-tub Feeder Wagon
• Loader/tractor work. Mucking out, bedding up etc.
• Calf rearing
• Occasional relief milking
• Managing transition cows
• Maintaining machinery
• General stock husbandry tasks
The Person: You need to be self-motivated and able to think for yourself and run all the day-to-day elements involved within this role. Someone who is an excellent communicator as the unit has many internal and external visitors.
