Job Description

The herd is autumn block calving, loose housed in the winter and grazes a surrounding grassland area during the season.

We are also able to offer with this position a very competitive remuneration package, with 90 days off per year, and a well-equipped accommodation free from rent, rates, and council tax, on the unit.  


LOCATION: The farm is situated approximately just outside the village of Bishopstoke, Eastleigh.   There is good schooling in the area along with a huge selection of shops and general facilities.  Southampton, south coast and the New Forest are all under one hour away.

THE FARM: The unit on the home farm is part of a family farming business, with this additional dairy unit and arable operation off lying.  Silage is made on the ground further away, with maize and short-term leys.  

THE UNIT: The unit comprises of a well-maintained parlour and dairy, with a 24:24 parlour, DTL with ACR’s.  With collecting yard, cow handling and calving area all well laid out on this compact unit.  Maize/grass silage is in troughs and the cows are loose housed.   

THE DAIRY HERD: Calving is in an autumn block from September to December; this is a commercial herd of 260 cows on a breeding programme of non extreme Holstein crossed with Brown Swiss and Swedish Red, with yields expected to remain at around 8000 litres.  The aim is to continue the system and performance.

ACCOMMODATION: A 2-bedroom house will be available on the unit, free from rent rates and council tax.  It is near the unit.

REMUNERATION: Subject to age and experience.

TIME OFF: This is a 275-day contract, with, therefore, 90 days off per contract year.

SUMMARY: This is an excellent opportunity for a competent herdsperson to make a mark for themselves on family farm run with energy and commitment within a 3-person self-relieving team.
