The German supermarket Lidl has promised to invest £15 billion in British food, farming and production over the next five years to help their suppliers expand and grow their businesses.
Investing in farmers’ future
As well as the extra funds, Lidl has also recently extended its contracts with farmers to allow them the certainty and stability they need to invest in their future, helping to create even more jobs. They have also launched a young farmers programme that is designed to support new talent in the farming industry. One such young farmer taking advantage of the scheme is Sam Bailey, who has just been named Young Farmer of the Year by Farmers Weekly. Sam is supplying 50% of this milk to Lidl GB stores under a long-term contract, giving him the confidence and resources to develop his business.
Sourcing more produce from British farms
In addition to this, the discount superstore has also recently pledged to source 100% of its fresh listed poultry from UK farms and to increase sales of British sourced fresh meat, poultry and fresh produce by more than 10% in the next year. Tom Hulme, of A.C. Hulme & Sons, who have been Lidl’s main supplier of apples and pears for over ten years, explains how his business has already benefitted from Lidl’s commitment, ‘we wouldn’t have even contemplated upgrading our packhouse if it wasn’t for our confidence in Lidl’s future custom. The company has stayed true to its word with its growing orders over the years, giving us certainty in an industry that faces many uncertainties – like the British weather!’
Continued commitment to UK farms
This isn’t the first time Lidl has shown tangible support for local farming in the UK. It has previously signed the National Farmers’ Union of England and Wales’ (NFU) Fruit and Pledge and back in 2017 it joined the NFU’s Back British Farming Charter. Ryan McDonnell, Lidl GB’s chief commercial officer, said ‘as our business continues to grow, it’s vital that our suppliers remain at the heart of our growth plans.’ He goes on to say, ‘our long-term partnerships with farmers are all the more important during economic uncertainty, and with 2019 marking our 25th anniversary, we are more committed than ever to supporting our suppliers here in Britain and offering customers British-sourced products in the future.’
