An exciting opportunity has arisen for an internationally experienced assistant herd manager on a modern and progressive unit near Khartoum, The Sudan.

The role would entail all aspects of herd management in a tropical climate.  Working alongside the herd manager you will have joint responsibility for the performance of the herd, management of the staff, liaising with vets, consultants, nutritionists and the cropping manager and are ultimately charged with the task of producing quality hygienic milk, consistent yields, heifer replacements and a happy healthy herd to world class standards within a profitable business structure. You will have a practical, hands-on style, knowing that to truly manage a herd of cows and you must be in and amongst that herd of cows. 

You will also be jointly responsible for the multi-national team on farm and the successful candidate will have both excellent stockmanship skills coupled with excellent people management skills.  You will have experience in a similar role, preferably outside of the EU or US and within a developing country. You will have an understanding of the challenges of milk production in a tropical climate.

Job Description

The European designed unit is less than 10 years old and enjoys world class facilities and infrastructure including a 50 point Delaval rotary parlour fitted with auto id, ACR’s, milk meters and other automation. There are excellent handling facilities close to the parlour including automatic shedding gate, foot bathing facilities and foot crush.  The herd is loose housed on sand in open sided sheds fitted with fans and misters to provide a cool environment and cows have access to large outdoor loafing areas which they utilise during the evening and night time. The farm is highly mechanised and grows the bulk of its forages within CPI crop circles including alfalfa, rhodes grass, sorghum and other native grasses and feeds the herd a TMR ration with bought in feeds to balance.  The herd consists of 1000 European bred Holstein cows plus young stock and has excellent genetic potential for high milk yields.
