This 1,700 acre mixed family farm in Wiltshire (SN8 3DP) has been widely recognised for excellent grassland management and now requires someone to lead a team of 5 milking 500 cows.
You will report directly to the Farmer who is actively growing this business which includes an arable enterprise. The current Herd Manager and his wife are leaving after 10 highly successful years to enjoy a quieter life in the beef sector. You will be leading a team to manage the herd and will need good people skills. Three team members are established on farm currently and are doing an excellent job. You will be encouraged to participate in various discussion groups the farm belongs to and access any training required. You will share milking duties through a new 36:72 with ACRs and parlour feeders, milking is a two person operation. Other duties undertaken by the team include feeding, bedding of cubicles with a straw chopper and other stock tasks including calf rearing up to 48 hours when they are handed over.
There is a strong emphasis on efficient milk from grass and cows calve in tight autumn and spring blocks to satisfy a Cadbury’s milk contract.
The herd is rotationally grazed with an excellent network of cow tracks and paddocks to maximise production from grass and cows are out grazing from late February to December.
An excellent package is available with ample and flexible time off. There is a nice detached 3-bedroom C/H house with AGA and wood burner, close to the unit, with large gardens, free from rent and Council Tax.
Location: A mixed 1,700 acre farm at Burbage in the Pewsey Vale, Wiltshire. The farm is in a beautiful location, close to Savernake Forest and the Kennet and Avon canal. There are good local schools and amenities in the village of Burbage; the market town of Marlborough is 5 miles away with the highly rated St John’s academy secondary school.
Farm Description: The 500 cow herd comprises tight autumn and spring calving blocks of Friesians and Crossbreds and are milked through a new 36:72 herringbone parlour, with in parlour feeding and ACR’s designed for 2 person milking. A TMR ration is fed to autumn calvers outside the grazing season. Housing is in loose yards and cubicles. Cows are currently yielding approximately 7,000 litres, and are milking very well with cell counts around 120.
Responsibilities: The candidate will lead the team of 5 people to manage the herd. They will be required to undertake all aspects of team management, day-to-day herd management, milking and herd health duties. The team undertake bedding, feeding and calf rearing up to 48 hours when they are handed over. You will report directly to the Farmer who is actively growing this business which includes an arable enterprise.
