Job Description

The unit features modern cow housing and sand cubicles and 7 years ago installed a completely new milking/handling facility with 20:40 parlour with auto shedding; now running with GEA cow scout collars. 

The cows are autumn block calving on a forage based/ in parlour feeding system, with yields around 8500 litres per cow.  Whilst milking a part of this role it does not dominate it.

FACT SHEET

Location: The business is situated in a very picturesque part of Sussex.  There were originally two dairies either side of the village of Balcombe, which has pubs and a post office.  The village of Cuckfield, which is very near, has a selection of pubs and small shops.  Haywards Heath is a large market town, with a huge array of shops and leisure facilities; it is a very popular town in Sussex.

The Dairy Unit:   The business originally comprising of two dairy units, amalgamated the herds and now has one modern unit. Grazing fields surround it on this all-grass farm with the exception of cropping forage maize.  The winter housing has been expanded with additional new sand cubicle housing and feed area with silage fed in mangers.  There is a 10-year-old immaculate 20;40 parlour, DTL with back flushing; integrated cow management software and auto shedding into excellent cow handling facilities.  The heifers are kept separate and reared off the main unit on residual farm buildings.

The Dairy Herd:   There are currently 360 Friesian/Holstein cows, autumn block calving from August to November with an emphasis on forage utilization; average yields are around 8500 litres. 

The Accommodation: Offered with the position is a very pleasant, spacious two bed mobile home opposite the unit.

Remuneration: Subject to negotiation.

Time Off: 105 days per contract year.

Summary: This is an excellent opportunity with flexibility for an aspiring herdsperson who is a team player; you will take an active role in the future performance and success of this herd.    Central to the role is production from forage, herd health, and fertility management and routine herdcare with a two-man team dedicated to the cows and supported by the extended farm team.
